Why Facebook Advertisers Quit

There are a lot of people who have created videos on how to start an online business or how to do social media marketing that, in my opinion, have a lot to answer for!

Don’t Believe the Get Rich Quick Hype

It’s ridiculous!  For years, so many people  have made it seem like Facebook and Instagram advertising is really easy and anyone can set up a campaign and be wildly successful with Facebook Ads.

They even make it seem like my Springer Spaniel could set up a campaign and succeed.

Facebook ads take skill to learn

I’m going to be 100% honest with you here. All of these videos and so-called tutorials that make big claims and promise easy results could not do more to set people up for failure when they first start running Facebook and Instagram ads.

When people take the advice that’s offered in these “get rich with Facebook videos” and first jump into these platforms they often fail miserably.

That’s not Facebook’s fault. It’s also NOT the fault of the person who is trying to make Facebook ads work.

The Reality Is That You’ve Been Lied To

Often the content that’s created by these so-called gurus promises the moon and the stars without ever mentioning the hard work it takes to get really good at something – including Facebook ads.

What happens is that people set up an ad campaign, and get terrible results to start. This Is super common – especially when you are just starting out. Then because of those bad results they correctly assume they’ve been lied to.

Unfortunately, most people just stop right there. They throw the baby out with the bathwater.

Instead of just thinking that they’ve been lied to in terms of how easy it is to get results, people often  think they’ve been lied to across the board and they think that the whole platform is a waste of time.

They believe that no one can ever get results, and that’s not true either.

Just because a Facebook campaign doesn't work the first time, doesn't mean the whole platform doesn't work.

I can assure you that Meta (Facebook ads) work. I have over 100 clients that are running live ads RIGHT NOW and they are generating fantastic results.

There are millions of Facebook and Instagram advertisers and the idea that there are zero people and companies producing results is completely ludicrous!

Here’s the REAL Truth About Succeeding with Facebook Ads

The truth is somewhere in the middle. The Meta platform can deliver fantastic results, but it won’t work overnight.

Facebook ads can deliver fantastic results

Facebook advertising is a skill, and in order to succeed at anything that is skill-based, you have to be good enough to get results.

You don’t want to think that Facebook advertising is the easiest thing ever, but you also don’t want to think that the platform can’t work for anyone and it’s all just a scam and a waste of time.

It’s not likely to work overnight or to work the very first time you try it. That’s just the reality. And that’s OK. You don’t want it to be so easy that everyone is great at it instantly.

Getting good at Facebook ads will give you a distinct competitive advantage.

Succeeding at Facebook Ads Requires Skill and Commitment

So, what is the solution?

Think of Facebook ads like it’s a new hobby.

Let’s say for example that you’re about to go skiing for the first time and for some reason on the very first day you decide to enter a downhill ski race.

If you do that you’ll probably break a lot of bones, and you also aren’t likely to win that race.

If you’re going to be competing against people who’ve been doing it for years and skiing is their passion then they’ve already dedicated the time and effort into developing their skills.

I know that it’s pretty obvious that you won’t win that skiing race in the example, but people expect to be able to win the race when it comes to Facebook and Instagram ads without putting the work in to get the skills to win.

The problem is that because of all the lies out there most people don’t even realize that they are IN a race.

Facebook ads are competative

But you ARE in a race. The Facebook Ad marketplace is an auction. It’s competitive. The people that are the best at it and who have the best offers for their audience will win.

You may be wondering why you should bother gaining the skill to run Facebook ads if it’s so competitive…

It’s simple really. There’s a huge upside potential to create positive ROI for your business – especially if you get good at this.

The reality is that any advertising platform that has a big upside advantage is also going to be competitive. It’s always a race.

All ad platforms that give a good ROI are competative

It doesn’t matter whether you are trying to grow a YouTube channel, develop a good Linkedin presence, or run TV ads or radio ads, you will always be competing against people who live and breathe that platform.

You’re going to have to compete against the people who are experts on ANY platform – including Facebook and Instagram ads.

There are no ifs, and, or buts about that. But I don’t want you to get discouraged. You CAN become good at running Facebook ads and develop the ability to unleash their full potential.

The REAL Solution to Succeeding at Facebook Ads

Here’s how to get good at Facebook ads without having to spend tons of money and years becoming an expert.

You get to choose the competition that you enter.

If we go to the skiing example you start by getting good at basic skills and then start with a local competition and then go up in steps.

If you want to succeed there are two things that I recommend that you do.

Firstly, commit to running Facebook ads for 12 months. If you commit to doing this for a year, then you will already give yourself a huge competitive advantage over people who try it for just a week or a couple of months.

Secondly, pick a market or niche that is small enough that you can relatively easily become the very best in that market.

For example, let’s take a look at patio cleaning businesses.

  • How many patio cleaning businesses are there within a 5 mile radius of where your business is.
  • How many of those patio cleaning businesses are actually advertising on Facebook?
  • How many of those patio cleaning businesses are good at that advertising?

The reality is that it’s probably not a lot.

It is a lot easier to win that small market with your Facebook and Instagram ads than it is a larger market.

Step up into more competitive markets

Once you’ve started dominating that market and your Facebook ads and Instagram ads are by far the best in that little niche, you can then move on to something that’s maybe a bit more competitive but also has a greater opportunity.

This is an easier and more natural progression and gives you a much bigger opportunity to succeed.

In your quest to become one of the best Facebook and Instagram advertisers in your niche, it is important to remember that it takes time, effort, and dedication.

It is a competition, and you have to become really good in comparison to the competition to succeed. But if you commit to it and follow these steps, you can achieve fantastic results and create a successful online business.

Ben, your connect is amazing! Questions about duplicating campaigns. Do any of the “learnings” from the original campaign carry over to the new duplicate campaign? I ask because we changed up our website structure a bit due to finding out that our FB conversions were being triggered when they shouldn’t have. We’ve since fixed this. Our current campaign then used these faulty conversion triggers in the learning phase.

I am now debating on either a) keeping the current campaign running with possible faulty learnings b) duplicate this campaign to hopefully have a restart on learnings or c) start fresh with a new campaign and new learning?
